PROGRAM PRESENTATION

Thanks to its expeditions, deep diving expertise and the desire to put ocean exploration at the service of science, UNDER THE POLE, together with the French National Centre for Scientific Research, has launched the DEEPLIFE • 2021-2030 research program. This ambitious global program relies on international scientific partnerships and aims to deepen scientific knowledge and preserve marine animal forests in the mesophotic zone of the oceans down to 200 m depth.

Inspired by the fruitful collaboration between the UNDER THE POLE, the French National Centre for Scientific Research and the Island Research Center and Environmental Observatory during the DEEPHOPE mesophotic coral study program in 2018-2019, the DEEPLIFE implements advanced diving resources like the CAPSULE underwater habitats, operated from the WHY NOT oceanographic sailboat, specially designed for deep diving and scientific research. The first scientific campaigns start 2022.

The research programs and the geographical areas are defined both by the UNDER THE POLE and the scientific consortium made up of international researchers.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG)

With its missions, UNDER THE POLE commits to preserve the oceans and their biodiversity. This way, its activity is in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations, underlining that water, biodiversity, ocean and climate are intrinsically linked and allow the maintenance of life on Earth.

SDG 14 - Aquatic life - recalls that one concerted action at all levels is necessary to preserve the health and integrity of the ocean, its ecosystems and its contributions to our society and all living thing. One of its major measures is to deepen scientific knowledge, strengthen research resources and transfer marine techniques (goal 14.8).

UNITED NATIONS DECADE OF OCEAN SCIENCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

UNDER THE POLE activities align with the goals of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

UNDER THE POLE • DEEPLIFE • 2021-2030 has been endorsed as an official "Decade of the Ocean" project, aiming to promote synergies, partnerships, public awareness, education and an effective science-policy interface, the ultimate goal of which is to enable joint and enhanced action for the ocean.

SCIENCE

A unique collaboration between UNDER THE POLE and international scientists to discover marine animal forests of the mesophotic zone (30-200 m in depth) and their role in the functioning of marine ecosystem.

During the world tour from the polar regions to the tropics through temperate regions, observations, samplings and experiments provide a precise marine animal forests risk identification in regards to the climate change (vulnerability hotspots). It offers mitigation and management tools for particular marine habitats, largely unexplored and ignored in actual conservation plans.

The scientific directors of this project are Laëtitia HEDOUIN (French National Centre for Scientific Research / Island Research Center and Environmental Observatory) and Lorenzo BRAMANTI (French National Centre for Scientific Research / Ecogeochemistry of Benthic Environments Laboratory). For any information relating to this program, please contact Myrina BOULAIS, scientific coordinator of the project: myrina@underthepole.com

Through collecting, aquarium experimenting, chemical, genetic, physiological and ecological analyzing, all of DEEPLIFE's data will ultimately provide a more precise identification of high risk regions and ecosystems regarding the climate change (so called hotspots sensitivity). This way, propriate mitigation and management actions adapted to these deep ecosystems (or integrating these ecosystems) can be put in place for a real protection of these ecosystems, actually ignored by conservation measures.

The world tour research program from the polar region, passing temperate regions, to the tropics, goals 3 main objectives:

  • Explore and discover the genetic, chemical and biological marine diversity in the deep zone between (30 to 200 m);
  • Evaluate the deep-sea organisms climate change tolerance;
  • Understand the vulnerability and resilience of the deep ecosystems to climate change and identify "hotspots of sensitivity" vs "resistance"

THE NEW BOAT

THE WHY NOT

A new oceanographic diving sailboat (0 to 200 m)

This sailing oceanographic boat, the WHY NOT, is an advanced research platform designed to allow the mesophotic zone exploration from 0 to 200 m, in every ocean and season. Equipped with two fast boats, a marine biology laboratory and a decompression chamber, it is the operational hub of the UNDER THE POLE expeditions.

  • Aluminum schooner with polar capacity
  • 35 m length, 9 m width
  • 100 square meters of solar panels, two diesel engines
  • 3 months operation autonomy and 9 months polar wintering autonomy
  • 15 to 22 people capacity (deep divers, scientists, sailors, engineers and technicians, photographers and filmmakers, doctor, cook… but also intellectuals, influencers, artists, journalists…) On board, each member of the UNDER THE POLE crew has a specialty but remains versatile, able to hold several positions

A NEW BOAT FOR THE OPTIMAL RESEARCH CONDITION

The 10 years of the UNDER THE POLE expeditions made obvious the limitations of the WHY (previous expeditions boat) and let us imagine solutions to meet the repetitive deep dives research needs. This way, it integrates experimentation means in situ with a marine biology laboratory, a strong operational deep diving capacity, suitable workspaces and a maximum level of safety.

  • Wet and dry scientific laboratory, aquariums, -20 ° C and -80 ° C freezers
  • Decompression chamber, infirmary and physiology laboratory
  • High capacity of O2 / He diving gas storage (for long and isolated missions)
  • Two CAPSULE underwater habitats boarding capacity
  • Two fast boats (6.40 m and 4.20 m semi-rigid) boarding capacity
  • Media studio

Next departures

The DEEPLIFE program begins with three missions in 2022-2023 :
1 polar mission in Svalbard, 1 temperate mission in the Canaries and 1 tropical mission in the Caribbean.

Under The Pole III is in the middle of the technical sailing of the North West passage, making its way through the increasingly compact sea ice. Leaving Resolute, the Team is now heading towards Gjoa Haven, for a challenging leg at sea. CANADA.Under The Pole III se trouve en plein milieu du technique passage du Nord Ouest a travers une glace de plus en plus epaisse. Quittant Resolute, la destination suivante est maintenant Gjoa Haven. Une navigation très compliquee s annonce. CANADA.
