UNDER THE POLE IV DEEPLIFE • 2021-2030
The underwater exploration program focused on the oceans knowledge and preservation, named an official project of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
With its experience of expeditions and deep diving and with the aim of putting ocean exploration at the service of science, UNDER THE POLE has launched the DEEPLIFE - 2021-2030 research program in association with the CNRS.
An ambitious program of worldwide extension, it relies on international scientific partnerships to deepen scientific knowledge of marine animal forests (MAFs) in the mesophotic zone of the oceans down to a depth of 200m for conservation purposes.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG)
With its missions, UNDER THE POLE commits to preserving the oceans and their biodiversity. This way, its activity is in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations, underlining that water, biodiversity, ocean, and climate are intrinsically linked and allow the maintenance of life on Earth.
SDG 14 - Aquatic life - recalls that one concerted action at all levels is necessary to preserve the health and integrity of the ocean, its ecosystems, and its contributions to our society and all living thing. One of its significant measures is to deepen scientific knowledge, strengthen research resources and transfer marine techniques (goal 14.8).
UNITED NATIONS DECADE OF OCEAN SCIENCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
UNDER THE POLE activities align with the goals of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
UNDER THE POLE • DEEPLIFE • 2021-2030 has been endorsed as an official "Decade of the Ocean" project, aiming to promote synergies, partnerships, public awareness, education, and an effective science-policy interface, with the ultimate goal to enable joint and enhanced action for the ocean.
Inspired by the successful collaboration model led by UNDER THE POLE - CNRS - CRIOBE around the DEEPHOPE mesophotic coral study program in 2018-2019, DEEPLIFE 2021-2030 implements state-of-the-art diving means, including CAPSULE underwater habitats, operated from an oceanographic sailboat - the WHY NOT - specially designed for deep diving and scientific research. The first scientific campaigns started in 2022.
The scientific directors of this project are Laetitia HÉDOUIN (CNRS/CRIOBE) and Lorenzo BRAMANTI (CNRS/LECOB). For any information about this program, please contact Myrina BOULAIS, scientific coordinator of the project: myrina@underthepole.com
A new oceanographic diving sailboat (0 to 200 m)
This sailing oceanographic boat, the WHY NOT, is an advanced research platform designed to allow the mesophotic zone exploration from 0 to 200 m, in every ocean and season. Equipped with two fast boats, a marine biology laboratory and a decompression chamber, it is the operational hub of the UNDER THE POLE expeditions.
A NEW BOAT FOR THE OPTIMAL RESEARCH CONDITION
The 10 years of the UNDER THE POLE expeditions made obvious the limitations of the WHY (previous expeditions boat) and let us imagine solutions to meet the needs of repetitive deep dives research. This way, it integrates experimentation means in situ with a marine biology laboratory, a strong operational deep diving capacity, suitable workspaces and a maximum level of safety.
The DEEPLIFE program begins with three missions in 2022-2023 :
1 polar mission in Svalbard, 1 temperate mission in the Canaries and 1 tropical mission in the Caribbean.
CANARY
September 2022: departure of the WHY from Concarneau (France)
October-December 2022: Canary missions
December 2022: transatlantic crossing with the trade winds to the Caribbean for the third mission
SVALBARD
Mid-March 2022: departure of the WHY from Concarneau (France)
April-June 2022: Svalbard mission
August 2022: return to Concarneau for a technical stopover
CARIBBEAN
February-May 2023: Caribbean missions
Summer 2023 : transit back of the WHY to Concarneau (France).
